This scintillating plant is Podocarpus parlatorei photographed in Samaipata, Bolivia. A large tree in the wild, it should be hardy in the Pacific Northwest, adding to our pallette of large-leafed podocarps which lend a much softer texture to the garden than many conifers. It occurs in Argentina as well, and recalls the Chilean P. salignus. This is in cultivation in the United States but I don't have it myself. Another even rarer species endemic to Bolivia, P. rusbyi, might not be, but would be worth trying. |
