Bamboo list
(This list is out of date - look for an update summer 2022)

Why bamboos? Bamboos are evergreen with beautiful foliage, grow quickly to a known height and then stop (doesn't everyone want all plants to do this?), have numerous uses (craftwork, stakes, etc.), and deer don't eat them. All these benefits are worth just adding water! Some of these bamboos are reasonably drought tolerant, including Bergbamboes and Chusquea species.

We have an increasing collection of clumping (non-invasive) bamboos including some very rare species that you won't easily find elsewhere. Bamboos are not available for mail-order shipping.

PAYMENT OPTIONS - UPDATED 2022
Some changes here in 2022 so read closely!

On-site shoppers:

We accept cash, check, or debit/credit cards. To encourage the use of cash or check, a 3% discount on your order total is offered when paying by these methods. Washington residents are charged sales tax at the rate of 8.5%; please inform us if you are visiting from out of state.

Mail-order shoppers:

The preferred method of payment is by a good old-fashioned personal check, made payable to The Desert Northwest. You can request an advance price quote via mail@desertnorthwest.com or just fill out an Order Form and mail it in with your check. (The order form is not mandatory if you already have a price quote from us via e-mail.) We will also accept a debit/credit card at no additional charge, but you’ll have to provide us with your phone number and a good time to call.

Mail-order shoppers within Washington will need to provide their specific postal address when requesting a price quote so we can look up your sales tax rate, ensuring that we can charge the correct amount. I'm not sure where we would be without the Washington State Department of Revenue to make this process as complex as possible.

A third option is payment via cryptocurrency (probably BTC or USDT). Please contact us if this interests you and if you are comfortable with it. We will absorb the fees to send it, if they are not too unreasonable. CashApp provides a relatively easy way to purchase Bitcoin, once you have downloaded and installed the app and verified your identity. CashApp will let you send up to $250 worth of Bitcoin per day; orders under this amount can be withdrawn to our BTC wallet directly (address provided on request). If you already have a Bitcoin wallet you prefer to send from, and/or have enough familiarity with cryptocurrency not to require CashApp, that’s fine as well. In the long term, we are working on a more user-friendly cryptocurrency payment solution for the web site. Please do not send us any cryptocurrency without discussing it in advance, so we know who it is coming from and when to expect it.

Retail/landscaper customers (must have Reseller’s Permit!):

Cash, check, and cryptocurrency are all acceptable methods of payment. No debit or credit cards please.

A few notes of explanation: The main change from previous years is that we have decided to dump PayPal, which has numerous problems. In the long term we also hope to get away from credit card processing altogether, but we don’t wish to make that change abruptly and lose business.

The reasons for these changes have to do with the state of international political turmoil in which we presently find ourselves, and recent reminders in various parts of the world of the ability of banks and governments to freeze digitally held assets without warning. We suggest that all people take as much control and custody of their assets as possible, and endeavor to avoid heavy reliance on institutional support, including entities such as traditional banks and PayPal.

Finally, in case anyone is wondering, we will note that selling cryptocurrency is counted as taxable income; hence, it is still subject to taxation when traded or cashed out (i.e. by us) at a profit.

RETAIL/SPECIMEN PLANTS

There are two ways you can obtain larger plants from our retail list: either you can pick them up, or we can deliver them to you. Here's how it works.

Picking Up Your Order

Please e-mail us at mail@desertnorthwest.com to schedule an appointment to pick up the plants of your choosing.

  • If you like, you may fill out and send in an Order Form, and pay for them in advance, and we will hold your plants from the time we get your payment until you pick them up. Don't forget to check the space on the order form that says "pick-up", and to add sales tax (unless you reside out of state), but not shipping charges, into your total.
  • Alternatively, you may e-mail us with a list of plants you would like, and pay for them when you come to pick them up, if you prefer. We'll hold plants unpaid for up to two weeks if you can convince us you're really hell-bent on coming.
  • And, of course, you can always visit the nursery by appointment to shop without having sent us an order form, though it's helpful to bring a list of what you're looking for since most plants in the nursery are unlabeled and we are the only ones who know where to find everything.

Plant Deliveries

For larger orders, plants can be delivered by us to your doorstep. For this service we request that you fill out an Order Form and make payment in advance. Please indicate if there is any time you would not like your plants delivered, and if you have a P.O. Box, don't forget to give us a physical address where you want the plants. When you fill out your order form, check the space that says "delivery", and add sales tax (unless you reside out of state), but not shipping charges, into your total. Please also include the delivery fee, if applicable: there is no charge for local deliveries if a minimum order is met (see below).

We deliver plants according to the following price schedule:

  • Immediate Sequim area (east of Kitchen-Dick, west of Happy Valley Rd.): Delivery FREE, minimum order $100.
  • Port Angeles, Port Townsend, Port Ludlow, and vicinity: Delivery FREE, minimum order $200.
  • Kitsap County: Delivery FREE, minimum order $350.
  • Anywhere else in west Clallam, Jefferson, Mason, Thurston, Pierce, King, Snohomish, Skagit, or Island counties: A delivery fee of $50 applies (possibly $30 if two orders can be coordinated in one trip); minimum order $350.
  • Outside these areas: Contact us!

Are these plants available for mail-order?

6/16/20 I need to rewrite this section. I have no idea what the paragraph below even means. At this time only the 4", D1, and D2 pots are available for mail-order, and the 1 gallon and larger sizes are not. Unless I make an exception for something short enough to stuff into one of our boxes. It never hurts to ask. But usually not.

Many of the 1 gallon* plants are, but larger pot sizes than 1 gallon are available for pick-up or delivery only. We incorporate into our Mail-Order List and Catalog those 1-gallon plants that are not too tall, heavy, or otherwise awkward to ship. Please note that 1 gallon mail order plants are offered at a different price schedule from this list. We suggest that you place your mail-order strictly from the Mail-Order List or Catalog to prevent confusion. (Essentially the mail-order price for these plants includes a $4 shipping surcharge, which we do because their weight adds disproportionately to the cost of shipping relative to the smaller mail-order plants. We have found that this accurately reflects the true cost of shipping them, making everything as fair as possible.)

Are the smaller plants from the mail-order catalog/list available for delivery/pick-up?

Yes! Pick-up and delivery are also available for all plants in the Mail-Order Catalog, according to the same picking-up specifications and delivery price schedule as listed above. This may be a less expensive option than shipping for local customers interested in a large number of plants. Plants from this list and the mail-order catalog may also be combined in your order for delivery or pick-up.

Any questions?

We're happy to clarify anything written here. Write us at mail@desertnorthwest.com and we'll discuss the ideal mode of delivery for what you wish to order, and quote you a price if desired. We're here to help.

*Note on pot sizes: We're going by vernacular usage when using terms such as "1 gallon", "2 gallon", etc. The pot sizes are actually somewhat smaller than a true gallon, 2 true gallons, etc.
Also, please note that this price schedule applies only to plants that you purchase or pick up here at the nursery, or that we deliver to you: the mail-order plants are offered under a different price schedule here.
