Ian's Plant Expedition to the Southwest US
December 2004

Page 2 - Arizona Part I

While driving to Phoenix, I found these very large, very silvery specimens of Dasylirion wheeleri in Salt River Canyon.

If you are visiting Phoenix, don't miss the fantastic Desert Botanic Garden.  Here is Yucca rigida, one of the best Yuccas for its pale silver-blue color.

The Phoenix Zoo has this great planting of Washingtonia filifera.

The Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior (east of Phoenix) contains a fantastic collection of the world's desert plants.  This is just a small part of the cactus garden.

I also had to take a picture of this Nolina matapensis.  I think these trunking Nolinas are totally cool and they also seem to be trouble free in the maritime climate of western Washington.

I then drove southeast and up into the Pinaleno Mountains.  Here is Quercus hypoleucoides growing up to 7,500' near Mt. Graham.  I was pleasatly surprised my car was able to drive up this mountain.

Quercus rugosa (reticulata) at 8,500' in the Pinaleno Mountains.

Here is a view to Mt. Graham from the place where I found Q. rugosa.

Pine trees at the top of the Pinaleno Range.

Two Chelianthes sp. (I think!) in the Pinalenos.
